Tumblr is a microblogging platform and social networking website that allows users to post text, images, videos, links, quote,s and audio to their "tumblelog," a short-form blog.
Users can follow other users, ‘reblog’ their posts, or choose to make their tumblelog private. Tumblr emphasizes ease of use.
Microblogging is a digital broadcast medium (on the internet) representing a sub-genre of blogging. A microblog differs from a traditional blog in that its content is typically smaller in both actual and aggregate file size. Microblogs allow users to exchange small elements of content such as short sentences, digital photos, or video links.
Like traditional bloggers, microbloggers post about topics ranging from the simple, such as “where I’m at now,” to the thematic and serious, such as “Slaughter in Syria.” Commercial microblogs also exist, usually to promote commercial websites, products, services, and to promote intra-organization (and less often, inter-company) collaboration.
Some microblog platforms or services offer features — such as the ability to change privacy settings (allowing users to control who can read their microblog content), alternative publishing methods (apart from the standard web-based interface), and much more. Publishing can occur via text messaging, instant messaging, e-mail, and even digital audio.
